Membership Requirements
"Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students in all disciplines, honoring inductees who earn a 3.5 grade point average their first semester in college. Membership in this society identifies you to employers, professionals, and graduate schools as a person of superior academic ability and commitment.
Phi Eta Sigma is dedicated to helping you attain your academic goals. As such, our chapter has emphasized the development of a society that provides opportunities needed for acceptance to many undergraduate and graduate programs. As a member of Phi Eta Sigma, you will be able to take advantage of the following opportunities:
- Scholarship: Scholarships are available through the National Phi Eta Sigma scholarship program. Cash awards sponsored by the University of Utah Chapter are presented each spring at the annual Induction Ceremony.
- Service Involvement: The chapter sponsors several service activities throughout the semester.
- Academic Enrichment: Phi Eta Sigma hosts the Brown Bag Lecture Series, developed to enhance the members’ academic experience. Professors from the University and other local,educational institutions are invited to present on various topics.
- Leadership: Members have the opportunity to apply for leadership positions, in which officers work to maintain the integrity of the society and develop service and lecture activities."
